Frequently Asked Questions

  • There is currently no standardized way to objectively show in real time if an exoskeleton is helping the wearer. This is something that would be innovative and desirable in an exoskeleton design for the Exo Games. Judges do discuss and consider whether they feel that the exoskeleton helped the wearer during the challenges or was the performance strictly due to the athletic ability of the wearer. Designing a way to perceive if an exoskeleton is helping the wearer is an option for teams but is currently not a requirement.

  • If part of the design of the exo is disposable, then yes that piece can be replaced during the competition when it wears out.

  • Teams aren't allowed to change the overall physical configuration of the exoskeleton from one challenge to the next. Teams are allowed to control their exoskeletons during the challenges for things such as speed and force of actuation.  Further, say an exoskeleton has gloves as part of the configuration. The exo would need to keep the gloves during all challenges. From a control standpoint, the wearer could use the gloves or not use the gloves depending on the tasks.

  • We are in the process of capturing images and videos.  We will post them on the website.  Teams will be notified when they are available.

  • The design will be evaluated during each section of the competition and the judges will try on the exos, if possible.

  • During the Confined Space Navigation, Firehose Carry Through Obstacle Course, and Fire overhaul with Halligan Tool challenges, specific firefighting gloves will be required to be put on.  If your exo has equivalent gloves already, then the judges will decide whether you need to wear both.

  • You may use any form of locomotion. Judges will stop any forms of locomotion that are deemed unsafe or that may damage the apparatus.  Please let the judges know if you are planning on doing any type of dynamic movements like large jumps, diving, flipping, etc.

  • Focus on the critical components that are taking the main loads.

  • New standards added since last year are:

F3578 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Exoskeleton Fall Risk due to Stumbling

F3581 Standard Test Method for Exoskeleton Use: Hurdles

F3582 Standard Test Method for Exoskeleton Use: Gaps

F3583 Standard Test Method for Exoskeleton Use: Beams

F3584 Standard Test Method for Exoskeleton Use: Obstacle Avoidance: Walking

Contact etcoe@astm.org to set up a reading room if you don't have access to these or other relevant standards.

  • They can go in the System Description, Experiments, Appendix, or where they fit logically.

  • ASTM covers 6 rooms for the week, 1 per team.
